Get ready for the Summer of Love!

Memorial Day weekend and two days of Shavuot (celebration of receiving the Torah) are opening the month of June. And on June 4, the Maimonides Medical Society will hold its closing event of the year, a reception and lecture on Maimonides and modern medical ethics issues. All medical professionals and spouses/significant others are welcome.

June is also the final month of our Annual Campaign, when we make a last, big push to meet our fundraising goal for the year. This year is no exception, although we are turning tradition on its head somewhat and working on something we think everyone will enjoy.

As our Federation staff discussed how to wrap up the 2017 campaign, we kept coming back to one idea: love. It is the common thread that runs through all we do at Federation. Federation's work is driven by love of the Jewish people and the Jewish community, as is your generous support of Federation. So this year we are celebrating the love that holds our community together.

The week of June 19, Federation will launch its first-ever "Summer of Love," kicking off a full season of special programs and events, big and small, for members of our Jewish community. The kick-off week will be a very busy one as Federation staff and volunteers show their appreciation to those who work very hard to make our community strong. Here's a small sampling of what we are planning:

  • Mitzvah Monday: Federation staff will say "thank you" to our local agencies with an early-morning delivery of sweet treats to their offices. Also Monday, our Cardozo Legal Society is having an informal Happy Hour mix and mingle. All legal professionals are welcome.

  • On Tuesday, everybody who visits the Maitland Jewish Community Campus at certain times (to be announced later), will receive a healthy sugar- and fat-free frozen treat.

  • On Thursday, Our Jewish Orlando is having a Mitzvah Evening lake cleanup, followed by Torah on Tap.

  • A Virtual Lemonade Stand online fundraiser will be going on all week. Buy your virtual glass of lemonade and receive a "sweet" lemonade badge to display on social media, with a link for others to give.

  • On Wednesday, Federation Board members and other volunteers will get on the phones and make a big campaign push.

  • The week will conclude on Sunday, June 25, with a PJ Library/Shalom Families park cleanup.

  • Federation's Summer of Love-themed events don't stop there. In July, Rhonda Forest, Larry Haber and I will bring your love to our Jewish brothers and sisters during JFNA's leadership mission to Ukraine and Israel.

  • We will wrap things up at the Annual Meeting on Sunday, Aug. 27 (which will have a special Summer of Love twist, of course).

We look forward to getting out of the office and into the community to see you face to face and to say thank you. You will hear much more about the Summer of Love soon. Keep an eye on our website and social media!

Shabbat Shalom,
